The Perfect Scoop
The origins of frozen desserts are unknown, though there are several often repeated legends dated as early as the 3rd millennium BCE in ancient China.

Some say ice cream originated in the Mongolian empire and first spread to China during its expansion.

Others believe the history of ice cream started in Iran’s Achaemenid Empire, in roughly 500BC. This is when different flavors were combined with ice in order to create treats to enjoy during the summer months. In 400C, the Persians created a special chilled food, which was a mix of vermicelli and rose water, which was served to the Royals during the summer months.

A kind of ice-cream was invented in China about 200 BC when a milk and rice mixture was frozen by packing it into snow.

An ice-cream-like food was eaten in China in 618-97AD. King Tang of Shang, had 94 ice men who helped to make a dish of buffalo milk, flour and camphor.

According to one legendary origin myth, the Roman Emperor Nero had ice collected from the Apennines Mountains to produce the first sorbet mixed with honey and wine.

The King of England, Charles I, is supposed to have offered his chef £500 a year to keep his ice-cream recipe a secret from the rest of England.

The explorer, Marco Polo (1254-1324), is believed to have seen ice-creams being made during his trip to China and introduced them to Italy.
