Tens of thousands of books (as well as movies, songs, and cartoons) entered the public domain every year, meaning you can now download, share, or repurpose these works for free and without retribution under US copyright law.

- Public Domain Day 2021 - On January 1, 2021, copyrighted works from 1925 entered the US public domain, where they will be free for all to use and build upon. These works include books such as F. Scott Fitzgeraldâs The Great Gatsby, Virginia Woolfâs Mrs. Dalloway, Ernest Hemingwayâs In Our Time, and Franz Kafkaâs The Trial (in the original German), silent films featuring Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, and music ranging from the jazz standard Sweet Georgia Brown to songs by Gertrude âMaâ Rainey, W.C. Handy, and Fats Waller.
- Public Domain Day 2022 - On January 1, 2022, copyrighted works from 1926 entered the US public domain, where they will be free for all to copy, share, and build upon. The line-up this year is stunning. It includes books such as A. A. Milneâs Winnie-the-Pooh, Felix Saltenâs Bambi, Ernest Hemingwayâs The Sun Also Rises, Langston Hughesâ The Weary Blues, and Dorothy Parkerâs Enough Rope. There are scores of silent filmsâincluding titles featuring Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, and Greta Garbo, famous Broadway songs, and well-known jazz standards. But thatâs not all. In 2022 we get a bonus: an estimated 400,000 sound recordings from before 1923â2â will be entering the public domain too!
- Public Domain Day 2023 - On January 1, 2023, copyrighted works from 1927 entered the US public domain.âThey will be free for all to copy, share, and build upon. These include Virginia Woolfâs To The Lighthouse and the final Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, the German science-fiction film Metropolis and Alfred Hitchcockâs first thriller, compositions by Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller, and a novelty song about ice cream.
