Photo and idea from: salad-in-a-jar.com |
So I find myself eating a lot of lettuce, but hate that it goes brown so quickly.
I wish I could try this tip, but I don't have a vacuum-pack machine.
Oh, but wait! She has links to articles on how to do this WITHOUT a vacuum-pack machine!
One article uses a Ziplock hand pump.
Questions and thoughts from readers:
Daynielle Jessica posted: REALLY frugal tip, use a Ziploc and a straw to suck the air out and seal!
Ziploc Vacuum Starter Kit |
Barb Sullivan posted: The bags are probably special to use the pump?
This video shows how to use the Ziplock pump with a canning jar or even an old spaghetti jar - no special bags needed!
More from our Facebook fan page:
Nicole Salmons posted: Great idea!
Kristal Wilder posted: I have a really old Foodsaver I paid $2.00 for at the vendor's mall. I wonder if the jar attachment would work on it?
Pam Maeker Payne posted: Have you tried using baby spinach instead of lettuce? Much more nutritious tastes better, and lasts much longer.

Helping young people be tobacco-free.
Young people are most likely to try smoking for the first time between the ages of 11 and 15, or grades 6 to 10.
If you are the young person's parent and a smoker, he or she has a higher chance of becoming one, too.
For more than 25 years, Right Decisions Right Now has been a free educational tobacco prevention program, and is designed to prevent young people in grades 5-9 from using tobacco in any form, including e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.

Wash out your Mega Bloks, put Jello in them, and you have Lego Jello! Kids love bright-colored wiggly food they can eat with their fingers! (Grown-ups too!)
TIP: You could make ice cubes too!
If you don't have any Mega Bloks to use, or you feel they would be too germy even after you washed them, you could use this Lego Ice Bricks Tray
Ingredients:
1-1/4 cups boiling water (do not add cold water)
1 package (8-serving size) JELL-O Brand Gelatin - any flavor
Instructions:
1. Stir boiling water into a dry gelatin mix in large bowl at least 3 minutes, until completely dissolved. Pour into clean Mega Bloks.
2. Refrigerate Jello for at least 3 hours or until firm.
3. Dip bottom of Mega Blok in warm water for 15 seconds. Lift Jello from Mega Blok. Store Jello in a tightly covered container in the refrigerator.
From our Facebook fan page:
Alex Summersell posted: And you might want to bleach those blocks before you use them for a jello mold! Kid germs you know.
Laura Robran posted: wow, what a great idea for children's parties. I love this.
Michelle Dabomb Brown posted: Also non-flavored cooking spray helps to release the jello. Thinking this might be what I take to the grad party!

How to Sew Your Own Baby Sling |
It's an easy way to carry your baby, and a discreet way to nurse.
Angela says,
It turned out to be very easy to sew a sling, especially since my husband did much of the work!
It took more time to shop for the fabric and sling rings than it did to sew the sling, which took about two hours from start to finish.
She was able to buy 2.5 yards for about U.S. $2.00/yard.

Is it hot where you are today?
If the heat is getting to you and your little ones, and you have a backyard to play in, no matter how small, this would be a fun way to cool off!
Cool the kids off with a homemade sprinkler!
Take a 2-liter soda bottle, poke holes in it.
Attach to a garden hose with duct tape, available from Amazon or any local dollar store!
Toss over a tree branch and let hang...

You can adjust how the water sprinkles by adjusting the water flow.
When the bottle stops working well, just switch it out with another bottle, no additional cost!
This one might not just be for kids!
The dogs might love it too ... maybe even an adult or two!
You could even use it to water your garden(s)!

Wrap the plastic tightly at the top/stem of the bananas.

How do you feel about cleaning the oven? I hate it!
When we got a new stove, I didn't care what it looked like, as long as it was self-cleaning!
And yes, it does a beautiful job!
But, if you don't own a self-cleaning oven, here's a tip you could use!
The best oven cleaner!
STEP 1. Cover the bottom of your oven with baking soda, then pour vinegar all over it, so it's all wet.
STEP 2. Let sit about 20 minutes or so, then wipe all of it out with a damp cloth or sponge. Leave the oven door open.
STEP 3. After drying you may see some white residue, simply wipe again. This will have your oven and oven racks shining like new!
Shopping Suggestions:
• Gizmos Depot Hot Mama
• Arm + Hammer Baking Soda
• Heinz White Vinegar
• 3m O-Cel-O Handy Sponge
• 100% Natural, Non-toxic Oven and Grill Cleaner Spray

The Car Seat Lady posted:
Tip (and mini craft project) of the day: prevent accidental unbuckling of your child's car seat!
If your child's car seat is installed with a seat belt, chances are a well-meaning back seat passenger (grandma, your 6-year-old in her booster, perhaps even you!) accidentally unbuckled the seat belt holding the baby's car seat instead of your own seat belt.
See how you can use a Solo disposable plastic or paper cup to prevent these accidents (but still allow access to the buckle in case of emergency).
P.S. To those who want to cover the buckle with tape, please don't - it just makes a sticky mess and can interfere with proper use of the seat belt in the future.
NOTE: Some cheap plastic cups crack very easily and actually present a hazard to your little one's fingers, should they play with it.
I suggest instead using a paper cup or even the silicone cupcake liners. If you would like something commercially made, Amazon has a list of Buckle Guards
The Car Seat Lady posted: The cups I use are the Solo cups which are quite heavy duty (same company makes the big red cups so often used for beer) - and have not had issues with them cracking. The cup I used is not a choking hazard (I'm a pediatrician, and am very aware of the dangers of choking hazards). I'd much rather a child's finger gets cut (which it won't the way I have designed this cup cover) than a child dies because the parent didn't realize the car seat had been accidentally unbuckled.
From our Facebook fan page:

Misty DeGroff posted: I would not do this as it could void out the warranty on your car seat. Any altercations or aftermarket things you use to fasten in or attach to your child's car seat voids out the warranty. That means if the seat was faulty, they will not pay any out of pocket and blame you for it failing.
Morgan Adams posted: How could protecting the buckle possibly void the warranty? It would not be altering any part of the seat or even the seat belt, just adding a
capover the buckle so it can't be accidentally unbuckled.
Heather Fisk posted: Not only that Misty, I'd be scared my kids would cut themselves on the half cut plastic. And who's to say they can't slide the cup up and unbuckle the belt anyway?
Misty DeGroff posted: Anything you put on your car seat, even those toys that hang on the car seat or that Mighty thighty (the thing that tightens the seat belt you fasten the car seat in, with voids your warranty. Read your user guide.) They say any aftermarket thing you attach to your car seat, and/or seat belt, can affect your car seat and its ability to protect your child. Not only that, the cups can be sharp and over time could cut or fray your seat belt.
Stephanie S. Leupold-Chastain posted: You might want to read the thing about using the silicone cupcake liners, Misty.
Sharlene Whissell Koziej posted: This seems like a great idea, we found our little ones seat undone one day, hopefully not undone too long though, kids like buttons and will work hard it figure them out. That's what happens when you unload the car, while you think your kids are safe. We try to be super moms, but sometimes we need help too.
Angela Waagen posted: I'm a firefighter, paramedic, and CPST [Child Passenger Safety Technician]. I'm also a mom to three. This is a super idea! To all the
what ifers - in an emergency we would just slide the cup up, tear it off, or cut the belt. If someone's worried about sharp edges on the plastic I'm sure some masking tape would remedy that. Thanks for helping spread tips on child safety!
