A Thousand Pioneers Head West (1843)
-- On May 22, 1843, some 1,000 men, women, and children climbed aboard their wagons and steered their horses west of Elm Grove, Missouri. The train comprised over 100 wagons with 5,000 oxen and cattle trailing behind. Dr. Elijah White, a Presbyterian missionary who had made the trip the year before, served as a guide.
Read: Roughing It on the Oregon Trail, by Diane Stanley, Holly Berry
-- What if you could close your eyes and open them to find you were amongst hundreds of pioneers in 1843, packing up your covered wagon to travel the 2,000 miles of the Oregon Trail? In their first journey, the twins spend eight months crossing the country on foot and by covered wagon, braving the mountain ranges and river valleys, battling floods and droughts, and cooking slam-johns and sowbellies over buffalo chips.
Westward Ho The Wagons!
-- The Stephen wagon train journeyed to the Northwest Territory via the Oregon Trail in 1844. The pioneers deal with the elements and occasional raids, but after hostile Pawnees drive off their spare horses, they realize they may not make it to the Oregon Territory. While stopping at Fort Laramie, the pioneer children make friends with Sioux children. After the Sioux chief's son is injured in an accident, Doc Grayson helps heal him, earning the trust of the Sioux. As the story ends, the Sioux warriors escort the wagon train safely through Pawnee territory.
