Golden Spike Day (1869)
-- Today marks the anniversary of the creation of the nation's first transcontinental railroad. The Golden Spike(aka The Last Spike) is the ceremonial final spike driven by Leland Stanford to join the rails of the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory.
Read: The Golden Spike
-- In the mid-1860s, as the Union Pacific Railroad headed westward from Nebraska, another company, the Central Pacific, pushed eastward from California. They aimed to meet somewhere in between, forming a single railway line to bridge the continent. That historic meeting occurred in May 1869 in northern Utah, and photographer Andrew J. Russell was there to document the historic event. His work resulted in one of the most important photos of the 19th century and probably the most famous railroad image of all time. The photo, often called East and West, was viewed by a worldwide audience and affirmed railroads were at the cutting edge of transportation technology.
Ten Mile Day
-- On May 10, 1869, the final spike in North America's first transcontinental railroad was driven home at Promontory Summit, Utah. Illustrated with the author's carefully researched, evocative paintings, here is a great adventure story in the history of the American West -- the day Charles Crocker staked $10,000 on the crews' ability to lay a world record ten miles of track in a single, Ten Mile Day.
