Greatest Show On Earth Day/Barnum and Bailey Day
-- On March 28, 1881, the Greatest Show on Earth was created by P.T. Barnum. Barnum soon merged his show with James A. Bailey's circus – and together, their circus became greater. In 1882, Barnum purchased Jumbo, an enormously popular elephant at the London Zoo, and transported him to the United States, where the larger-than-average elephant — called by Barnum the largest elephant ever seen — became the star attraction of Barnum's circus.
Read: The Greatest Shows on Earth: A History of the Circus
-- Traveling back to the circus’s early days, Linda Simon takes us to eighteenth-century hippodromes in Great Britain and intimate one-ring circuses in nineteenth-century Paris, where Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso became enchanted with aerialists and clowns. She introduces us to P. T. Barnum, James Bailey, and the enterprising Ringling Brothers and reveals how they created the golden age of American circuses. She shows how the circus has transformed in recent years. At the center of the story are the people ― trick riders and tightrope walkers, sword swallowers and animal trainers, contortionists, and clowns - who created the sensational, raucous, and sometimes titillating world of the circus.
The Greatest Show on Earth
-- Cecil B. DeMille's The Greatest Show on Earth is a lavish tribute to circuses, featuring three intertwining plotlines concerning romance and rivalry beneath the big top. DeMille's film includes spectacular action sequences, including a show-stopping train wreck. The Greatest Show on Earth won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Story.
