International Day of the Seal/International Day Against the Canadian Seal Hunting (1982)
-- In 1982, the U.S. Congress set aside the day to consider the plight of seals worldwide. Commercial hunting of seals is currently practiced in eight countries: Canada, Greenland, Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Namibia. Most of the world's seal hunting takes place in Canada, which has become the center of heated debate because of the size of the hunt. International Day of Action for the Seals is aimed at raising awareness about the problem of illegal seal hunting and the importance of seal conversation.
