Robinson Crusoe Day (1709)
-- Anniversary of the rescue of Alexander Selkirk (in 1709), a Scottish sailor who had been put ashore (in September 1704) on the uninhabited island Juan Fernández, at his own request, after a quarrel with his captain. His adventures formed the basis for Daniel Defoe's book Robinson Crusoe. A day to be adventurous and self-reliant.
Read: Robinson Crusoe (Illustrated Classic)
-- The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe(original title) was first published in 1719 without any reference to its author, Daniel Defoe. The book was presented as a true autobiography of a castaway marooned for 28 years on an uninhabited island. It has been considered one of the first English novels and is one of the most published books in history. Crusoe becomes self-sufficient using material salvaged from shipwrecks and endures cannibals, earthquakes, and mutineers before his final rescue. He rescues a native who has escaped from cannibals and names him Friday in reference to the day of the week he was found. The book's plot is believed to be based on the story of the real-life castaway Alexander Selkirk.
Robinson Crusoe DVD
-- As the sole survivor of a disastrous high-seas shipwreck, Robinson Crusoe (Pierce Brosnan) is forced to build a solitary life on a deserted tropical island. But he eventually discovers even this existence is threatened by a local tribe, which uses his island for barbaric sacrificial rituals.
