-- Adding cheese to your hamburger became popular in the late-1920s to mid-1930s. Various stories are shared about how the cheeseburger was invented, and many people have claimed to be the original inventor. The popular story is that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger between 1924 and 1926 while working at his family restaurant, The Rite Spot, in Pasadena, California. He is said to have suggested adding a slice of cheese to a hamburger, while other stories say a homeless person suggested it. Eventually, his burger was added to the restaurant menu as a cheese hamburger. Some do not give Sternberger credit for the cheeseburger because his burger was not technically called a cheeseburger.
