Similac Formula Recall (US)
I received two free cans of Similac formula yesterday - and then heard about the recall - bug parts being found in powdered formula. They have an allowable level of natural contaminants in all manufactured foods (bug parts, rat hairs, etc), so this must exceed that amount.
Ingesting insect material may cause stomach disorders, as well as allergic reactions. There is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.
I checked the following link to see if the formula I had received was recalled before I donated it to our local food shelter and it was OK. But a friend just posted that her free formula was on the list. So check any Similac powdered formula you have on hand!
The recall of these powder infant formulas includes:
- Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
- Certain Similac powder product lines offered in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.
This recall is for U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean.
