Looking for a budget-friendly, endlessly creative activity that never goes out of style? Say hello to homemade salt-dough art — a hands-on classic that transforms pantry staples into lasting treasures.
Whether you're crafting with kids on a rainy afternoon, prepping handmade ornaments for the holidays, or just indulging your inner artist, this simple project is pure magic.
You only need three ingredients you probably already have at home:
1 cup salt
2 cups flour
1 cup warm water
Mix everything in a large bowl until a dough forms. Knead it gently for a few minutes until smooth and pliable. Voilà — you're ready to sculpt!
Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thick. Use a floured rolling pin to prevent sticking. This is your blank canvas!
Use cookie cutters for clean shapes (dip them in flour first for extra ease).
Go freestyle with kid-safe butter knives, drinking cups, or fingers to sculpt your own designs.
Add textures using forks, toothpicks, straws, bottle caps, or even the head of a screw (adults should supervise!).
Want to make a keepsake? Try pressing a child’s handprint into the dough and carving their name beneath it — perfect for gifts and memory boxes.
Once your masterpiece is ready:
Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake at 325°F for about 30 minutes or until dry and firm.
Let cool completely before painting.
⚠️ If you're planning to hang your art (like for ornaments or mobiles), don’t forget to poke a hole near the top using a straw or toothpick — before baking!
Break out the acrylic paints, markers, glitter, or whatever inspires you. Add a layer of clear sealant or mod podge for a glossy, protective finish.
If you have leftovers, just pop the unused dough into a covered container and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. More fun, less waste!
